Primarily scrapbooks and photograph albums. Five volumes of scrapbooks compiled from 1923 to 1976 include newspaper clippings with obituaries, marriage and University announcements, news of local happenings and various special subjects including canoeing and her church. The collection includes 9 photograph albums and a folder of loose, unidentified photographs. Four of the photographs (including 2 portraits) have been removed to the Society's photograph collection. Subjects of the photographs include: World War I soldiers (including scenes of camp life, boxing and mess hall cooks); travel scenes; the University of Iowa, including 2 views of football games; domestic subjects such as house interiors, Christmas celebrations, social life and customs; family members; farming; the National Guard (including a picture of the Iowa State Guard, Co. C, 1st Regiment at Camp Dodge, Iowa, 1942); transportation and automobiles. A folder of personal items includes Earl Gifford's certificate of honorable discharge (1919); wedding mementos, clippings and announcements; and a receipt from Luberger's in Cedar Rapids for a table, carpeting and slipcovers. The collection also includes 12 canisters of 16mm film depicting travels (Seattle (1956), Spokane (1960), Canada, Florida and New York) as well as Christmas celebrations, scenes of Des Moines and Pella, Iowa. The films have been removed to the Society's film collection.

Alice Mary Gifford was born in Lakefield, Ontario, Canada to Hugh and Elizabeth Mahood Fitzgerald. In 1896 the family moved to Iowa City and at one time operated a boat dock on the Iowa River near the University of Iowa Memorial Union. In 1927 she married Earl J. Gifford in Iowa City.
